The media is an ever-changing constant in this world, and now that social media has
made its debut, it seems that it is here to stay. Social media brought about many different
platforms that millions of people use daily. This essay will be used to analyze the popular social
media platform of Instagram. In this essay I will talk about Instagram’s creation, how it is used,
and the impact it has on its users’ communication behaviors.
Co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger developed Instagram in san Francisco and
was launched on October 6, 2010. Systrom initially created a prototype app that he called Burbn
that would allow for people to check in where they are from the app. When Krieger joined him,
they decided that this app was too much like other apps that were already established, they
revamped the app by taking away those similarities and only leaving the ability to upload photos,
comment, and like. At this point, because the changed everything else, they also decided to
change the name Burbn to Instagram as a reference of being able to send an instant telegram.
As stated above, Instagram’s was to be used as a way for people to check in from
wherever they are with a picture. Besides posting a picture, liking and commenting were the only
other features that Instagram had to offer at the time. According to IANS at Business Standard,
Mark Zuckerberg, who is the creator of the social media platform Facebook, saw Instagram as a
threat and wanted to buy it so Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in 2012 (Ians,2020).
But, before both Systrom and Krieger left Instagram in 2018, they introduced what is known as
Instagram stories and IGTV. This is where users now can post videos and tell stories with more
than just a picture. What started as only being able to post 30 seconds of a video on a user’s
“feed”, then turned into a minute. With those changes and more, users of this platform continued
to grow and be able to now not only post pictures, videos, and stories that disappeared after 24
hours, and be able to comment, or follow whoever they wanted, they could now direct message
