Introduction
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a healthcare condition that affects
the lungs through airflow obstruction. This disease mainly affects the elderly aged from
thirty-five years to sixty-five years. According to a research done by COPD Foundation
(2015), it is estimated that approximately 30 million US citizens suffer from this disease.
Similarly, more than 60 million people around the globe suffer from COPD. There certainly
is a need to address this problem globally. Henceforth, the paper will outline and discuss the
concepts of health maintenance, health promotion, health restoration, and health teachings of
COPD patients integrating it with evidence-based practice.
Health Promotion Techniques of COPD
Health promotion concept was brought into the limelight back in the year 1986 to
support countries that are profoundly stricken with both acute and chronic diseases. The
health promotion techniques that will be used to create awareness for COPD both locally and
internationally are as follows. Bestowing on Kessler and Renggli (2011), the first step is to
focus on the determinants of health. These determinants include individual lifestyle factors,
social and community networks, and general socioeconomic, cultural and environmental
conditions.
These determinants will help in outlining areas that are prone and need more attention
while it also helps in understanding the leading causes of COPD. Secondly and most
importantly, is to focus on the five techniques of health promotion. The first one being,
building a sound public policy on the COPD environmental or individual causes. Secondly is
to create supportive environments for COPD patients, which will curb the causes of COPD.
Furtherly, toughen community actions through planning strategies to enhance self-help and
support from the community for COPD patients. Developing personal skills is also amongst
