Standard Terminologies
SNOMED CT.
According to Robboy (2009), systematized nomenclature of medicine-clinical terminology
(SNOMED CT) refers to a collection of standardized terminologies and coding language used in
medicine. It is used in coding information, providing stored medical data, and analyzing it. It
also provides tables showing concepts in the clinical field and their descriptions and
relationships. One particular clinical concept in SNOMED CT may have a potentially
inexhaustible number of synonyms referred to as descriptions. Relationships in SNOMED CT
are used to refer to complex concepts which can be combined.
LOINC
LOINC refers to a standardized language commonly used in laboratories and clinical fields (The
University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center). It is used when making comments or
describing what has been observed.
RxNorm
RxNorm refers to a standardized naming framework for nonexclusive and marked medications
(Kelley, 2016). It also serves as a tool for semantic interoperation between medication names and
information systems used in pharmacies.
CPT
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) is the standard grouping of methods performed by
doctors or other medical personnel in carrying out therapy or diagnosis (The University of
Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center). Updates and corrections are done yearly then American
Medical Association (AMA) publishes the changes in the procedures.
