A 34 year old Caucasian male with symptoms of polyuria, polydipsia, blurry vision and a
40 pound weight loss over a two month period presented to an outpatient specialty clinic.
This article describes the evidence-based evaluation and management by the advanced
practice nurse (APN) of a patient with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus. Special
emphasis is given to the criteria necessary for differentiation between type1 diabetes
mellitus (T1DM) and other types of diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes mellitus
(T2DM) and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA).
