Da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa depicts a half-body portrait of a woman sitting on
a chair. Wearing a faint mysterious smile, the sitter is positioned to face the viewer, and the
clothes she has on portray the fashion of her time. A veil covers her delicately painted hair and
her right arm rests on her left which in turn rests on the armrest of the chair (Zöllner 13). Behind
the sitter is a distant landscape comprising of rocky horizons, flatlands, and roads among other
aspects. Over the centuries, scholars have had numerous speculations on the identity of the
‘Mona Lisa’ sitter. The most considered identity is tied to Lisa del Giocondo, a model and the
wife to Francesco di Bartolomeo del Giocondo, a wealthy silk merchant from Florentine (Zöllner
14). In the masterpiece, da Vinci applied the Italian Renaissance style known to have occurred
from the 14th century to the 17th century.
Content and Iconography
Mona Lisa clearly breaks from the 16th-century Florentine traditions allowing da Vinci to
paint a confident and contented sitter who would mesmerize the intended audience. Seemingly,
the artist intentionally left out attributes of affluence, status and social role, and he positioned the
sitter to depict morally sound conduct (Zöllner 12). The presentation is simple, and it contrasts
with the luxurious lifestyle one would imagine Lisa del Giocondo lived. The evidence of
simplicity is affirmed by the absence of expensive jewelry such as neckpiece, bracelet or even a
ring. Seemingly, ‘Mona Lisa’ is a unique work representing a time ahead of its own.
