DOWN SYNDROME 2
Down syndrome
Each body cell depends on body proteins to function appropriately. Alterations in genes sometimes
inhibit the proteins from operating correctly. Mutation of a body protein with a critical function
might lead to a medical condition, or a healthy development disrupts. The genetic disorder gets
caused when there is a mutation in at least one gene (Sanders.et.al, 2019). The paper will discuss
Down syndrome as one of the conditions, how it works and its location, its causes and the people
vulnerable to the illness.
Down syndrome occurs when there is extra genetic material from chromosome 21. The disorder
occurs to children born with extra chromosomes. The chromosomes are the gene groups that tell
the body how to function, grow, and develop. Usually, people are born with 46 chromosomes.
People with Down syndrome often have an extra chromosome 21, adding to 47 (Arumugam.et.al,
2016). The disorder affects the body development and the functioning of the brain.
Down syndrome works in different forms. There is a change in physical characteristics,
inconsistency in cognitive development, and other unique health issues. People with Down
syndrome often have eyes that slant upward, their muscle tone is low, and their stature is always
small with short necks. The disorder also leads to development delays; Down syndrome children
develop slowly as compared to their peers (Malak.et.al, 2013). On average, at 11 months is when
the born babies sit, at a period of 17 months they crawl and at 26months is when they walk.
Attention problems might get experienced, adverse judgments and imprudent behavior.
However, when these children with Down syndrome attend school, they might get more brilliant
and knowledgeable than others hence valued members in the society. Down syndrome often leads
to a heart defect. Other health risks involved might include; respiratory problems, difficulties in
hearing, childhood leukemia, thyroid conditions, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy. Trisomy 21
is one of the mutations that cause these challenges. This type of alteration is common, and it occurs
