SOCIAL MOBILITY OF SPARTAN WOMEN 2
Spartan Women and Athenian Women
Ways That Spartan Women Enjoyed Greater Social Mobility than Athenian Women
They enjoyed status, power and respect
Spartan women were formally excluded from the military as well as political life since they were
mothers of Spartan warriors (Evans, 2017). They also had the responsibility of running the
estates as their men engaged in military activity.
They controlled their property
Unlike Athenian women, Spartan women managed their property as well as that of their male
relatives who were in the army. Additionally, they could also inherit property from their fathers
and husbands. Research proves that some of the wealthiest Spartans were women.
They were educated and never married early
As opposed to Athenian women, Spartan women were better educated and did not marry before
the age of 20 (Evans, 2017). They also possess a reputation for controlling their husbands as well
as promiscuity. Athenian women were rarely seen outside, and they wore concealing clothes.
This was not the case for Spartan women as they wore short dresses and were free to go where
they pleased.
