A- Event or Situation: Carlin is shocked by his current situation. He has just gotten
information that he about to be laid off after working for the same company for more than
20 years. Being middle-aged, Carlin is concerned about finding a new job. The rate of
unemployment is high, and he fears that his job skills may no longer be competitive in
today's labor market. His wife Sarah is a teacher, and most likely, she will be the one
taking care of the expenses. Carlin is also worried about expenses like health insurance,
funds to shift to the new house, and education expenses for their two children who are
college. The couple knows for sure that they will need to locate in another area and cut
down on their expenses.
B- Possible Resources:
1. The textbook states that parents can utilize individual resources that include
intelligence, acquired skills, and personality characteristics (Price, Price & McKenry,
2016). Other personal resources are those that are connected to positive and negative
mental health like positive self-esteem, physical, and psychological health.
2. According to week seven lecture notes (Sillito, 2019) on Stress and Coping with Later
Life, Carlin and Sarah can be in social networks; this will help them in maintaining
positive mental health and lowering their psychological distress. Losing a job can
cause financial constraints, which can be stressful.
3. Sarah is wife to Carlin, who can be supportive; this means that the likelihood of stress
is minimal since the wife will help in taking care of some expenses. According to the
textbook, family integration promotes cohesion and unity within the family based on
