Corruption comprises a significant problem in most of the developing countries.
Corruption tends to hamper the development of a country, aggravates problems of the
economy, and exacerbate the differences between the rich and the poor. Other problems
associated with corruption, including forming barriers to economic and political reforms
along with causing considerable human welfare losses (Justesen & Bjornskov, 2014). African
countries have been among the most affected nations as the problem continues to persist.
Corruption percentage rose sharply among African countries between 1984 and 2006, as the
middle corrupt countries began transitioning to become the high corrupt countries during that
period (Owoye & Bissessar, 2014). In 2012, the Transparency International reported that sub-
Saharan Africa scored an average corruption score of 3.3 of a maximum possible score of ten
in its Corruption Perception Index, with a score of one being highly corrupt (Luiz & Stewart,
2014). The statistic highlights the glaring problem of corruption the countries face that places
them amongst the corrupt nations worldwide.
Corruption has serious implications for the development and welfare of a nation.
Despite the high levels of corruption in African countries, implications and impact vary from
one region to the other because of the differences in conflict experiences, structural
adjustment programs, the existence of external aids, and the dependence on the existing raw
materials (d'Agostino, Dunne, & Pieroni, 2016). There is also the aspect of decentralization
and disorganization of corruption differing from one country to the other, thus raising the
issue of the differences in implications and impacts. Politics influence the level of corruption
in a given country by either promoting or discouraging corrupt activities. The type and
amount of corruption vary from one country to their other according to the number of factors
that affect the existing relationship between the government and the civil society (Asongu,
