The Importance of Being Earnest is a play written by Oscar Wilde. The play was first premiered in
1895 in London. Its genre of the play is a farcical comedy. The play’s protagonists is a made-up
person that is trying to escape onerous social obligations. Its main themes are triviality with which it
treats institutions as serious as marriage, as well as the resulting satire of the Victorian ways. It has
been praised for being rich in humor. However, some people have criticized it for lacking social
messages. The play is a satirical criticism of the Victorian social hypocrisy. Jack Worthing is the
protagonist in the play. Other characters include Cecily Cardew, Gwendolen Fairfax, and Algernon
Moncrieff. Jack Worthing is a stylish man living in the nation with Cecily Cardew, his ward (Wilde 17).
Jack has discovered a sporty brother referred to as Ernest, whose supposed achievements give Jack
an excuse for traveling to London occasionally to rescue him. Jack has fallen in love with Gwendolen
Fairfax, who is a first cousin of Algernon Moncrieff, his friend. For all the time they have been in love,
Gwendolen thinks that Jack’s real name is Ernest. Lady Bracknell, the mother to Gwendolen objects
their marriage because Jack is an orphan who was rescued after being found in an in a handbag at
Victoria Station. Later, Jack establishes that Algernon has been impersonating Ernest with the aim of
wooing Cecily, who for a long time has been in love with the imaginary rogue Ernest. In the end, it
revealed that Jack Worthing is a nephew of Lady Bracknell and his real name is Ernest and Algernon
is actually his blood brother. This play ends with both couples happily married. Several scholars have
