YOUTH RISK FACTOR AND RESILIENCE 1
Discussion Questions
Chapter 19 discussed different risk factors related to youth problem behavior at
different parts of the social structure (Table 19.1). Choose two of these risk factors
and provide a summary of each.
The concepts of risk and protection are essential to public health and promote resilience
among the youths (Arditti, 2015). Peer influences and a family structure are two factors related
to youth problem behavior at various parts of the social structure.
Peer influences: many studies have found a consistent link between delinquent behavior
and the presence of a delinquent peer group. The presence of antisocial peers, for example, is a
critical predictive variable for teenage problem behavior in youth aged 12 to 14. Peer pressure
and acceptance of delinquent behavior are enormous, and this relationship is amplified when
children have few interactions with their parents (Farrington et al., 2017).
Family structure: Risk variables connected to teenage problem behavior and delinquency
include family size, poor parenting abilities, household discord, antisocial parents, and child
abuse. Poor parental monitoring, parental disagreements, and parental violence, such as severe
punitive discipline, are significant predictors of subsequent violent criminal convictions
(Farrington et al., 2017). Living in a family with four or more children and being raised by a
single parent are both connected to greater delinquency.
Using the two risk factors identified above, create a strengths-based intervention or
strategy that could be implemented to increase resilience. Provide a brief summary
and explanation of each intervention or strategy.
A strength-based strategy can be implemented to increase resilience is family-focused
prevention. The effective family-focused intervention aims to provide support to families to

address problems to do with family functioning. The most effective method is known as
Behavioral Parent Training (BPT). BPT educates parents to be consistent while rewarding
excellent conduct and punishing or ignoring negative behavior (Pardini, 2016). Because BPT is
based on the notion that antisocial conduct is acquired and perpetuated by reinforcement and
punishment from others, particularly peers and parents. It can help with peer influence concerns.
This approach also includes additional communication skills, assertive discipline, speaking
respectfully, and problem-solving skills (Pardini, 2016). BPT promotes positive youth
development and also enhances resilience.
Consider the risk factors you identified above in terms of public policy. Identify one
policy recommendation you would make to address these risk factors. Explain your
reasoning.
Cohesive Policies can influence youth behavior. Hence, I believe that a peer education
program should be adopted at various phases of a child's life to reduce the increase in young
involvement in risky behavior. Peer education is a process in which trained professionals assist a
subsection of the target population in imparting knowledge to their peers in an organized
manner, modeling healthy behavior, identifying youths in need of extra assistance, referring
them for assistance, and advocating for services and resources for these peers. Peer education has
been employed in various settings to effect behavioral changes, with the primary goal of
reducing teenage involvement in risky conduct (Maciver, 2017). As a result, if this strategy is
successfully implemented across the country, juvenile involvement in risky conduct will be
significantly reduced.
