Introduction
When people from varying cultural beliefs and background come together to work and
communicate, they are involved in intercultural communication Individuals who deal with
people from other cultures should learn how to improve their skills and performance through
improving their intercultural communication skills. This helps them to gain intercultural
understanding and therefore achieve their goals. In addition, intercultural communication is
important in the business world when meeting with people from other cultures and taking many
important decisions. The main purpose of this report is to show how intercultural communication
is important to conclude successful business deals and to point out that working with foreign
countries is not like working in your own country.
Needs and Benefits
This report will focus on the problem of miscommunication between Canadians and Chinese
through the Canwall Case Study (Beamer & Varner, 1995). During intercultural negotiations like
this, people need to pay close attention to different culture values. It is important to point out
these issues of intercultural awareness because this can help solve the problems of
misunderstanding. This will benefit both cultures in the case because they will be able to be more
successful and know more about other cultures and beliefs.
Scope
In this report, we will compare the Canadian and Chinese culture with attention to high/low
context and the cultural difference in how people view the concept of time (Barrett, 2008). These
are the principles of intercultural communication theory that we thought were most important in
this case and seemed to cause the problems of miscommunication. Instead, we decided not to
focus on other aspects of cultural difference, such as power distance and collectivism vs.
individualism (Hofstede, 1997) because we did not identify those problems in the Canwall Case.
Method
We used two methods to gather the information and to analyze the case. Firstly, we read the case
and searched for behaviors that are related to each culture (China and Canada) in relation to high
vs. low context and the importance people give to time. We prepared a table to classify the
behaviors of the Chinese and the Canadians according to the two aspects of culture as a way to
help us understand them better. Then, we discussed the mistakes that each one made and we
thought how they can avoid or correct them. We also used Internet to read some articles about
the cultures of Canada and China.
Findings of the Analysis
In this project we found that the Chinese showed typical behaviors of a high context culture.
They liked to work in a group and build relationships. They also needed more time than one
meeting to discuss details and make decisions for their project. In addition, they did not want to
have a strict time for payment However, the Canadians showed clearly that they are a low
context culture. They did not care about meeting a lot of people to build relationships. They
wanted to do the business deal quickly and not waste time with details. They also did not want to
