Personally Identifiable Information
Over the years, there have been many incidents in which people’s Personally Identifiable
Information (PII) have been compromised and have caused the victims of loss to experience
shame and identity theft. The loss of PII not only affects individuals but also the companies
responsible for the safekeeping of the PII. The demand for Americans to protect their privacy
has become a great focus in The US recently. Increased reports of loss and misuse of public
information prompted the U.S. government to establish laws to govern over the protection of PII
such as the Privacy Act of 1974.
The Privacy Act of 1974 was established to provide protection (safeguards) for individuals
against an invasion of privacy by federal agencies. The Privacy Act of 1974 was used to restrict
the disclosure of PII. The act also stated that privacy of an individual is a personal and
fundamental right. It grants individuals access to records maintained on themselves and the right
to correct records that are not accurate, relevant timely, and complete. (DCPLO, 2013)
Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is defined as “any information about an individual
maintained by an agency including (1) information that can be used to distinguish or trace an
individual’s identity, such as name, Social security Number (SSN), mothers maiden name, or
biometric records (i.e., iris scans, fingerprints) and any other information that is linked or
