Political Parties and the Electoral Process
The United States of America is based upon the foundation that every citizen has a voice in the decisions
that our government makes. The two major political parties that American Citizens use as a means to voice
their concerns and cast their votes are the Republicans and the Democrats. Their are other, third parties in
our country that citizens are a member of, however, these third parties have not been successful at the
presidential level. The campaign process is a major force in the success of a politician and its political party
making it to the White House.
The Republican and the Democrats have several ideological differences between them. The first ideological
difference lies in the basic core beliefs. Republicans believe that each person is responsible for his or her
own place in our society. At the core of the Republican philosophy is the belief of limiting the intervention of
government as a means of individual prosperity and that government should only intervene in a very limited
capacity. In contrast, Democrats believe that it is the responsibility of the government to care for all
individuals even if this means giving up some individuals rights. Democrats favor centralization of power in
Washington D.C. And also favor federal level interventions that would replace community based solutions.
A second major ideological difference between the Republicans and the Democrats is in regards XXXXX
XXXXX economy. Republicans believe that free enterprise is the best course of action. In contrast,
Democrats believe that business decisions should be guided by the government and they are in favor of
labor unions.
Taxes and government spending is a third difference in the ideological beliefs of Republicans and Democrats.
The Republicans believe that government spending should be cut and they also believe that each individuals
should be in control of their own personal finances. In contrast, Democrats believe that the federal
government should be in control of spending rather than individual citizens. A fourth difference in ideological
beliefs between Republicans and Democrats is in the area of Education. Republicans believe that every
student in our country, regardless of race or socio-economic background needs to be proficient in reading
and math and that schools should be accountable for students progress via testing. Democrats believe that
test are not an answer and that they essentially waste the teacher’s time. In accordance with this belief,
Democrats believe that students should stay in their same school, even if the school is not performing and
teaching as it should.
While many people may remark that a third political party is the answer to many of the dilemmas in this
country, their are a few reasons why third political parties have never been successful. One reason for the
lack of success of a third political party is that they have traditionally emerged not from the more reasonable
middle of the road thinkers, but rather from more radical thinkers who have emerged out of a sense of
frustration. Another reason for the lack of success of third parties is that the leaders of these parties did not
succeed in creating lasting leaders that would be a permanent figure head for a lengthly duration of time.
Money and a lack of powerful and influential backers is another reason for third political parties not being
successful at the presidential level. Money, influential leaders, and business affiliations are all essential for a
political party to be successful at the presidential level. In addition, the third parties, such as the
Libertarians, Reform Party, or the Constitution Party, are at a disadvantage due to federal campaign finance
laws and rules that mandate who can enter presidential debates. Third parties also receive much less media
attention than the two dominant political parties.
The campaign process has a significant role in maintaining a two-party system. The key elements for
modern day campaigns are money, strategy, and advertising, usually in the form of television. Since the
United States has two main political parties each one seeks to gain a large amount of support as their
appeals are designed to win the support of a diverse electorate. Even though their are significant differences
between Republicans and Democrats they do overlap on many key issues. The campaign process allows
