EQUALITY FOR NON-HUMAN ANIMALS 2
Question:
Peter Singer reasons for what he calls the “basic principle of equality”. What is this principle
and how is it supposed to be applied? What reasoning does he give that this principle should be
applied to non-human animals? Do you agree? On what basis do you think we should determine
which types of beings should be treated with equal moral consideration?
Answer: Peter Singer has provided reasons for believing the basic principles of equality” on
which equality regarded as equal consideration for all beings. Although, this principle of
equality stress upon the provision of equality to all human beings; and defend the differences that
exist among them. At the same time it gives us a basis that cannot be restricted to humans only.
In other words, this principle of equality provides equal considerations for others who belong to
our own species as well as to others who do not belong do our species, the non-human animals.
At first instance it seems as bizarre, but it is reality. Today, the most important moral issues that
we observe are the oppression of women and blacks in our societies. But, we should not neglect
the importance of non-human beings as well, these are all serious issues. There are some
arguments arise that no doubt, the welfare of animals is important, but how can we waste of time
as well as energies on the equality of non-humans being when there are so many humans exist
among us, who do not get real equality. I think the consideration of our own species is simple
and we can have clear understanding about it; it requires us to give equal considerations to all
others people who are less intelligent than us, or who have different race than us. We should not
exploit their rights and interests. But at the same time this principle of equality also implies us
that we should not exploit the rights of non-human that are not member of our species. I believe
that equal moral considerations to non-human will result into a day when there will be no
tyranny to animals and they will be given equal considerations as like our own species.
