Sullivan (2009) stated, “an organization that continuously engages in the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, abilities, or attitudes to grow, respond to changes in the environment, and improve product or service quality” (p. 288). That quotation can be summarized into one word, innovation, which is a key internal driver of change at Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin’s previous CEO, Marilyn Hewson, stated that “we view innovation as the lifeblood of our corporation – and the key to our future success” (Lockheed Martin Corporation 2018 Annual Report, 2019, p. V). Innovation inherently requires some level of change, and change requires learning – learning from past performance, as well as change processes or experiences. This capacity for continuous reconstruction is called resiliency and is a critical factor enabling an organization, as well as their employees, to continuously reexamine its position in relation to internal and external factors affecting its standing within the marketplace (University of Maryland Global Campus, 2021).External drivers of change in the defense industry are the ever changing external industry dynamics and emerging industry trends. In 2000, Lockheed Martin announced the results of a strategic and organization review that would “realign its businesses, flatten its management structure, reduce corporate staff, evaluate the divestiture of non-core operations and enhance financial management processes” in an effort to more effectively respond to external factors within the industry (Lockheed Martin, 2000). These actions were forecasted to have the following effects:Streamlining the business portfolios to improve operational performance by eliminating an organizational layer and focusing operations into 17 lines of business.Making key senior management changes. Every aspect of strategic leadership is important for the Army. Leaders must manage resources and personnel in peace and wartime while maintaining an advantage over adversaries and outperforming enemies (UMGC, 2021).Over the past decade, military deployments have changed from prolonged stability operations to smaller scale deployments (Sharpe & Creviston, 2013). To adapt to this changing situation, leaders in the Army must remain aware of environmental conditions, be trained with different skill sets, and be engaged with subordinates to lead them. In just the past decade, there have been multiple countries with conflict where Army service members have served. The challenges of this changing environment show the importance of strategic leadership in the Army.
