Pedagogy of the Oppressed
Introduction
In the Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire raises some issues which may be
important in the understanding of education systems. In the work, the primary motivation for
Freire was to find the best approaches through which he could address oppression and
marginalization in education. One of the most famous statements which many people have
referred to from the book says that “Education either functions as an instrument which is used to
facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring
about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women
deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of
their world.” The implication of this statement is that it is possible for an education system to be
designed in a manner which promotes marginalization and oppression. It is out of this desire that
Paulo has always been classified among radical educators. His strategies were aimed at coming
up with mechanisms to understanding the oppressive education practice and developing the most
suitable mechanisms to approach them. Paulo spun around the mainstream pedagogy by
demonstrating that knowledge and skills are already among people and there is no need to feed
them on propaganda which is aimed at to change their habits. The main purpose of this paper is
to carry out an analysis of Paulo Freire’s thoughts in the Pedagogy of the Oppressed so as to
understand its suitability to modern-day education.
Paulo Freire’s concept of education from the Pedagogy of the Oppressed
The central idea in Freire’s concept of education is that education ought to be used as a
