DESCRIPTION
Portrait of a Man in Red Chalk by Leonardo Da Vinci and painted in the Renaissance Era
1512, was a red chalk painting on a canvas that is 33.3 cm long and 21.3 cm wide. The center of
the painting consists of a man with his face staring into blank space. It is representational of a
man. The head is giant in proportion to the other objects in the painting. There is a lot of
repeating lines for his hair which makes the volume in the hair more than if he just did the whole
hair at once. The painting is like tan, brown color for the whole thing. He darkens the tan brown
for areas that have depth. There is a lot of empty space around the face, but the painting looks
like a man got inside a carbonite freezing chamber from Star Wars. The dots make it look like it
was drawn on a sidewalk or a gravel road. The dots make the painting look rough and not
smooth like other painting.
ANALYSIS
The artwork has a focus and emphasis on the man in the portrait, with the man’s face
being the overall focus of the painting. There is a rhythm of dots around the face that creates
space. The man’s face is big, and the depth of the face is created by darker shading of the chalk.
Unity is achieved by the dots around the head and the head hair continues longer. The painting
has dots around the face, then for the face, Leonardo used texturing to show the face popping out
of the paper. There are darker shades of tan for the eyes for depth. The hair also is single
threaded and repeated to create depth and volume that his hair is long. The man’s face
automatically draws people in the painting because it is just a different style of the outer part of
the artwork. The face is giant, it is 2/3 of the canvas. When people are drawn to the face, you go
to the eyes, nose, and mouth. Then their eyes go the hair which the hair goes down to the
painting. There is no major symmetry in this artwork,
