ENG 125 DISCUSSION QUESTION
Mostly the literary genres have a quality to elicit emotional feelings as well as sentimental
response to readers. The notion of catharsis is well evident in Synge’s Play “Riders to the Sea”.
This is only drama that focuses on the issues of Catharsis, and in return proves an overwhelming
emotional feeling on the audience in a great way. The prime example of Catharsis is the mother
Maurya in Synge’s play. She is the key character in this drama that experiences a series of
sorrowful emotions as a result of major tragedies in her life. For instance, in the beginning of
Synge’s play she loses her family. She mourns on this loss and has bad feelings as well. After
this tragedy she has sleeping disorder, through the words of her daughter; we notice that she is
sleeping “if she is able”. Synge writers and all of the audience observe her sorrow face, tears and
posture; in this way they conceive a more overwhelming response than they could get simply
reading the play. Furthermore in the end of Synge’s play Maurya again comes through the
emotional feelings when she grieves on the loss of her beloved sons. But after all she delivers a
hopeful note on the audience by sharing her feelings about the acceptance of tragedies in her life.
In her last speech she says “no man at all can be living forever" and we must be satisfied.
Through this sentence Synge gives his readers a catharsis and helps them to understand that life
goes on, Synge, J. M. (2000).
