TATTOOS AND REMOVAL 2
Which layer(s) of skin is/are penetrated when someone gets a tattoo?
the outer layer of the skin called epidermis
What happens in the skin that allows the ink to remain and become permanent?
The immune system of human body cells considers ink like an antigen, and they initiate a constant
fight, which makes tattoo stains to last forever. During piercing, a wound is usually left on the skin,
which makes the body swell (Tortora & Derrickson, 2008). This initiates an antigen-antibody reaction
on the surface of the skin, and this makes the marks retained forever.
What is the process of removing that ink through laser tattoo removal? Can this cause any
damage to the skin?
Laser tattoo removal involves directing a laser light to the tattoo surface in which the beam of light
absorbs the tattoo ink particles without injuring anybody tissue surrounding the tattoo. Once the ink
is absorbed by laser light, it is heated up and shatter into fragments of ink molecules, after which it
will be flushed away from the immune system of the body and eventually fades. A continuous
treatment makes the ink to shutter more and more hence, fading leaving the skin surface free from
stains.
