Public schools have long been considered inferior to private schools. It is the wish of
most parents to take their children to a private school as these are associated with discipline,
better performance, and better extracurricular activities and equipment. Additionally, most
people think Christian schools, which are nonpublic, are the best institutions for out-of-home
schooling. While some of the arguments that exist for and against public and Christian schools
are true, public schools do have both advantages and disadvantages and Christian schools are not
always the best institutions. Public schools may be overcrowded, ill-equipped, and frequented
with indiscipline alright, but they are also affordable, well-endowed in terms of natural
resources, racially-diverse, and offer a more varied curriculum that is based on national or state
standards which are not always the case in Christian schools.
One of the disadvantages of public schools is that they are often overcrowded. In many
cases, public schools serve low and medium-income children who are the majority. As such,
many classrooms are overcrowded (Banisakher & McCauley 68). Additionally, many public
schools are not well-funded by the government. This means that they cannot build enough
classrooms for all students. There is a lot of bureaucracy in obtaining funds for public schools.
Sometimes, the process might take years. Many people have to be consulted before funds are
approved to improve public schools. Often, too, public schools have to compete for resources

with other public agendas such as security and health. This, in many cases, leaves public schools
without adequate resources to develop enough infrastructure for students.
Many public schools are not equipped with modern teaching and learning resources.
Many of them have fewer than the required number of teachers. This often reduces the student-
teacher interaction that is crucial in promoting learning. Other resources such as books and
computers are often not adequate for all students. This results in inadequate access by students to
the best learning materials. It is not possible to offer the best education without enough learning
and teaching materials. Additionally, public schools may not offer all the necessary
extracurricular activities that are supportive of learning.
As a result of overpopulation in most public schools, teachers are, in most cases, not able
to effectively administer discipline among students. Students in public schools are also at an
elevated risk of negative peer pressure such as truancy and dropping out (Thompson 325). The
fact that public schools are public goods also means that excluding students known to misbehave
is difficult. Therefore, indiscipline rates are generally high in public schools than in private
schools.
Despite these disadvantages, public schools are quite affordable. This allows many
parents to afford public schools. If public schools were to be scrapped, many people would not
have an education since they cannot afford private schools. Also, the government has better
control of public schools. This helps to ensure these schools have access to qualified teachers and
use the most advanced curricular. Public schools admit students from diverse backgrounds. For
example, they admit Christians, Muslims, Hinduists, and Buddhists. They also admit students
from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Besides students, they also hire teachers from
