Books What's That
Technology has come of age in terms of simplifying human activities in different aspects
of their lives. The youth, however, has taken the element of entertainment through technology as
a way of their leisure time. Video games, radio, televisions, among other items, have been on the
forefront for the young generation’s time passing moments. Books What's That is a cartoon by
Jose Neves that tries to portray the different ways that technology has misled the young
generation. The picture of the cartoon contains an individual who is overloaded with all types of
technological gadgets, which include an iPod, laptop, alcohol, television, a radio, among others.
Al these truly represent the different activities that young people have gotten into as a result of
the introduction of technology. Technology obviously has several benefits as compared to the
negativities, but for the image, the topic is the different ways through which it has brainwashed
the minds and lives of the youths. Thus, Jose Neves’ cartoon uses visual and verbal techniques to
appeal to pathos to show how technology has negatively impacted the youths as compared to the
earlier times using a political cartoon.
Political Cartoon Techniques
The first technique that Neves uses is that of exaggeration technique to bring out the
intended meaning of the political cartoon. The image has a lot going on in it to the extent that
one would wonder what is happening and what is not. Some of the activities in the cartoon

include video chatting, alcohol consumption, music listening, book reading, and game playing.
All those activities are impossible to be done at the same time depicting that the author of the
cartoon used exaggeration only to deliver the message to the audience. Another exaggeration
comes in where it appears that there are clouds outside, meaning that the picture is not inside a
house. Maybe the intention was to show that it was day time but used a lot of hyperbole to
demonstrate this. The author also uses analogy as a technique in the political cartoon.
An analogy is another technique that Neves used in the political cartoon to show the
relationship between two, unlike things that share some characteristics. The set in the political
cartoon shows the main character having a video chat while at the same time listening to some
music through the earphones (see figure 1). This, in a way, is not possible, but it brings a
rhetorical appeal through humor and anger. The main reason as to why the author incorporated
the two, unlike things, was to make sure that all the intended aspects of technology were
accommodated in the political cartoon. It would not have made sense if the author opted to uses
several images to represent all the items in the image. Reading and playing video games are two,
unlike things that mostly happen differently. The analogy of reading a book is considered
serious, while that of playing a video game is termed as a leisure activity by many. The author of
the image has also used labeling as a technique.
Besides, the author uses labeling as part of the techniques, which involves adding labels or
phrases to make sure that the audience understands the meaning. One of the labels in the cartoon
is that of conversation that is going on between the person in the cartoon and the one on the other
said of the laptop. The label indicates a question posed on how one can turn on a technological
gadget that is bringing troubles during its booting (see figure 1). Another label is that of the book
named Shakespeare. It intends to show the audience that the person in the cartoon is also reading
