Introduction
A profession is not a profession simply because it says that it is. The clients and the
community as a whole must accept the professions’ claims and trust them with jurisdiction over
the important areas of human aspirations. Professions produce work regarded as expert. Before
professionals can produce expert work, they require many years of study and also practice. The
society depends on professionals for their security, justice and health. Therefore, a deep and
crucial moral obligation rests on the profession, and also its professionals, to develop and use
expertise for the best interest of the larger community. Today, the American Army provides an
important service to the American people. The representative government has granted the Army
autonomy to use lethal force, if need be, on behalf of the American people. An important
component in the profession of arms is the Army’s culture- the beliefs, goals, values, attitudes
and behavior rooted in courtesies, customs and traditions. Just as personality is to an individual,
culture is to an organization (Dempsey, 2010).
Human beings fight as a group or as individuals. Some people fight for money, others for
the love of fighting, while others fight because they lack alternative opportunities. Others fight
for civic duty and love of their country. Since the past, human societies have come up with
groups of specialists who, unwillingly or willingly, assume the burden to fight, kill and die for
the good of the larder community. It does not matter the formal name that has been given to
these different groups. The fact remains that they belong to the profession of arms (Dempsey,
2010).
In civilized societies, especially the democratic ones, it is a basic premise that the state is
served by the military and not the other way round. The main reason for the existence of the
