Read the below scenario and answer the following questions.
Maria works full time and has two young children. After careful consideration, she decides to return to school to earn
a degree in Early Childhood Education. Though she is enrolled in an online university (which is more convenient than
a traditional school setting), she is still overwhelmed because of the new demands on her time. She has been trying
to balance staying late at work, taking care of her kids, and working on school assignments. Because she has so
much to do, Maria has put off working on her final paper, thinking each night, “I’ll get to it tomorrow.” Finally, she
confides in a friend that she is too tired to write the paper and she doesn't know what to do. Her friend tells her about
a company that writes papers for students. Maria goes online to check it out because, at this point, she is willing to do
whatever it takes to just get the course over with. She decides to pay to have her paper written just this once so that
she can get through this busy and stressful time.
Questions
How is this student's behavior academically dishonest?
Is it ever acceptable to use someone else's work as your own?
What should this student have done in this situation?
What consequences could she face if it was found that she did this?
In what ways might others be negatively impacted by this student’s dishonest behavior (e.g., other students,
the instructor, the university, or her children)?
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two of
your classmates’ posts by Monday, Day 7. (You must create one initial post and at least two responses, for a
minimum of three posts for this discussion.)
Maris’s behavior is academically dishonest because she not doing any of her paper on
her own. She is doing the most dishonest thing, in my eyes. She is paying someone to
do this paper. I understand the stress and having kids. I think that paying for a paper is
just so dishonest is wrong.
In my eyes it is never acceptable to use anyone’s work. IF you use someone’s work
you should reference the person’s work. It should never be used as your own, when
someone else wrote it. It isn’t fair for the other person.
Maria should have put a little time aside each day. If she has no time in the morning,
than do it in the evening for an hour. An online student needs to always set time aside
every day to read and work on assignments.
She could get in some major trouble for this. She would receive a warning a long with a
zero. A zero on any paper could cost you. She could fail that class because she was
just too busy to take an hour and sit down and work on it.
I believe that is so unfair to all the students who did their own assignment for Maria to
do this. Every student has something in their life, but finds the time to work on a paper.
