Question 1
Based on the negative impacts that lead has on children’s heath, there should be global
standards for toy manufacturing. These standards should be aimed at regulating the amount of
lead used in the paints as well as plastics that make toys. One benefit of the establishment of
such standards is that children will less be exposed to lead and other heavy metals involved. In
addition to this, the standards will also reduce the risk of lead getting exposed to the environment
following the disposal of these toys. On the other hand, these standards will mean that the quality
of toys will not be as good as they were before. This is because lead has been used as a
compound that enhances the shape of these toys. Apart from this, the economy side will also be
affected since there will be an increased potential for sales going down.
Question 2
Since 80% of the toys sold in the United States come from China, the United States
government bodies involved should be very strict with the toy-trading relationship. In this case,
they should place more emphasis on ensuring minimal lead use in the toys. However, the United
States wouldn’t be able to control toy manufacturing in China since it is not the only country that
China exports its toys. On the other hand, the General Administration of Quality Supervision,
Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) of China can be useful in regulating toy production in the
country. The furthest that the United States can go is to regulate the production of toys imported
from China. Other than this, the country can create awareness to influence other countries that
China exports toys. This way, they can all come together and regulate manufacturing.
