DEEPWATER HORIZON DISASTER OF 2010
Deepwater Horizon Disaster of 2010
The Deepwater Horizon rig is owned and operated by offshore oil drilling company
Transocean and leased by oil company BP. This oil well was located four thousand nine
hundred and ninety-three feet below the surface and extended eighteen thousand feet into the
rock. The explosion of the oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizon which was operating in the
Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico happened on April 20th, 2010. The oil drilling
Deepwater Horizon exploded and sank, leading to the death of eleven employees and injured
seventeen employees (Summerhayes, 2011). This was the largest oil spill in the history of marine
oil drilling operations.
When the explosion occurred, four million barrels of oil were lost from the destroyed
Macondo well over a period of eighty-five days. The spillage was capped after several months,
and all the attempts were successful on July 15th, 2010. The oil spillage caused a lot of damages,
and this called for legal and ethical issues.
The oil spill caused the largest environmental disaster in history. A massive response was
implemented to protect beaches and wetlands, but due to the long months of the spill, a lot of
effects were experienced in the environment as well as aquatic life. Apart from the effects of the
oil spill, the cleanup and response activities also affected or damaged marine and wildlife
habitats as well as tourism grounds (Summerhayes, 2011). The cleanup activities were extremely
intense, that more damages were caused in the long run. The Louisiana shoreline and the beaches
were filled with oily materials and matter that they could not support any tourism activities for
several months.
