The character who I have chosen from the fiction who is limited in his or her role in
society is Desiree. Based on the article provided, this character is limited on her roles. Chopin
(1893) states that “What Désirée said was true. Marriage, and later the birth of his son had
softened Armand Aubigny’s imperious and exacting nature greatly.” This means that marriage
which was influenced by the society shaped ones perspective. Based on the story, Désirée is an
adopted child of Monsieur and Madame Valmondé who were childless. They considered the
child as a gift from God. After some time she is married to Armand Aubigny which makes her to
become happy. The two are blessed with a kid who bring delight to both couples. Desiree is one
of the characters in Kate Chopin's play whose function in society was shaped and limited by her
unique racial background. Though it was not indicated by her physical appearance or the color of
her complexion, it was claimed that her kid inherited the physicochemical properties of being
dark skinned.
From the story, Désirée says, “And my skin is fair,” seizing his wrist. “Look at my hand;
whiter than yours, Armand,” she laughed hysterically (Chopin, 1893).” This bigotry has wreaked
havoc on her relationship as well as her personality. When she came to terms with the terrible
reality, she was met by her own husband's hasty judgment and wrath towards a race that her
husband is well aware of and strongly opposes, but that she was unaware of. She was forced to
terminate her own life and that of his baby out of desperation and social judgment, so that they
might both be free of agony and ridicule from the individuals she believed would embrace,
defend, and support by them.
A notation piece by Maia Kobabe speaks about gender equality. Maia is also another
character who is limited in her role in society. From the non-fiction piece, Kobabe (2019) states,
