Aging Effects: Techniques for Accommodation
Exercise 1
Glaucoma is a term that refers to a group of illnesses that can result in vision loss due to
damage to the optic nerve head (Zwierko et al., 2020). Glaucoma can have a variety of adverse
effects on a person's life. Healthcare practitioners are critical in educating and aiding patients in
managing their glaucoma and adhering to their prescribed glaucoma management regimens. Due
to the fact that individuals with glaucoma may have a variety of health difficulties, healthcare
staff should be knowledgeable about glaucoma and the importance of continued treatment in
order to support care effectively.
The elderly are at a higher risk of developing glaucoma as a result of probable ocular
damage and other health problems that can indirectly cause glaucoma. As life expectancy
increases, glaucoma-related vision loss and ophthalmology workload are expected to increase.
Patients with asymptomatic glaucoma may present with significant lasting changes. By the time
vision loss occurs, 90% of optic nerve fibers may have been irreversibly damaged (Bhorade et
al., 2021). Intraocular pressure is decreased as a result of treatment (IOP).
Damage to the retinal nerve cells impairs the field of vision, typically beginning in the
peripheral area. We are unaware of sight loss until it is significant since the visual areas of our
eyes overlap, and peripheral vision is largely ignored in most people's perceptions (Zwierko et
al., 2020). Although secondary open-angle glaucoma progresses slowly over time, certain
varieties do. Over half of persons with glaucoma in developed countries and 90% in developing
areas go undetected. Through community optometric services, opportunistic detection is
possible. Due to unequal access, those with low earnings are less likely to be diagnosed and
treated. Numerous individuals indicated for investigation by optometrists do not have glaucoma.
