INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
Industrial revolution
The industrial revolution was a period between 1760 and around 1840. This was a
transformative moment for the manufacturing industry, in Europe and the united states of
America as the processes and the strategies were changed (Labor, 1990). The revolution
involved changing from small scale production of goods to large scale production, where
machines replaced human labor. There was also increased use of steam power in the production
process, and the use of machine tools was embraced. The industrial revolution also brought about
the factory system, where the production of goods was fully mechanized. The industrial
revolution was the transition point from the hand-crafted economy into the machine dominated
the manufacturing industry.
The industrial revolution first began in Britain in the 18th century, which then spread to
other parts of the world. There were the first and second phases of the industrial revolution. The
first revolution began in Britain, and it spread over to countries such as Belgium, France,
Germany, and Japan then later to the other parts of the world. These countries were abled
differently since while some were rich in resources, others had conducive governments, and
others were ecumenically powerful. Also, this phase involved the use of hard metals such as steel
and iron. the second phase, which took place in the 19th and 20th century included the use of
natural and synthetic materials and metals (Ashton, 1997). During this period, metal alloys were
used, plastics were now used, and computers were introduced hence leading to automatic
factories. Technological socio-economic and cultural changes characterized the industrial
revolution. The technical modifications involved, use of iron and steel, and the primary raw
materials, energy sources used in the factories were changed into coal, steam, petroleum, and
electricity. New machines were invented, especially in the textile industry, which made work fast
and reduced the use of human energy. New systems were also introducing in the sectors, such as
division of labor and job specialization, which ensured high productivity. As a result of the
industrial revolution, communication and transport systems were developed, and they led to the
invention of telephones, telegraphs, the automobile, and radios. A lot of designs and innovations
were made during this time, and this led to increased efficiency in the production processes
hence mass production of goods.
The industrial revolution also led to the development of agriculture as new and better
agricultural processes were used. The economy was developed and improved as more people
were employed in the factories. It led to the distribution of wealth, and more people lived better
lives now. There was a growth and increase in international trade since mass production resulted
in surplus products that could now be exported. There was also a change in politics since the
attention shifted to economically powerful people. There was also a change in the social settings
of the people, as more people moved to urban areas in search of employment. Cities developed,
and those that existed grew as rural-urban migration intensified. The social structures also
changed as more women began doing the tasks that were previously meant for men since the
men were out looking for employment. People became more educated, more experienced, and
more skilled in their work. They moved from being craftsmen to becoming machine operators
and supervisors. The industrial revolution led to a lot of inventions and innovations which
formed the foundation of the world we have today.
