In Chapter Three of Adult Development and Lifetime Assessment, you read about morality and values, which develop
over time as we learn and reflect on what is right or wrong. Academic integrity is being honest and responsible in the
academic realm. Consider the Chapter Three reading and respond to the prompts below:
Describe a specific situation (academic or personal) in which you had to use your moral judgment to make a
decision.
Would you have made the same decision earlier in your life? Why or why not?
In your own words, describe what academic integrity is and why it is important for students at Ashford
University to uphold the highest of standards.
Use Adult Development and Lifetime Assessment as your primary source for this discussion, and include at least one
in-text citation and a reference in APA formatting at the end of the post. Please be sure to highlight the citation in
yellow. Remember, the citation is included in your content and the reference is added at the bottom of your post.
Using the toolbar on the textbox window, highlight the citation in yellow. Review the PSY202: Writing Resource for an
example.
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two of
your classmates’ posts by Monday, Day 7. (You must create one initial post and at least two responses, for a
minimum of three posts for this discussion.)
I remember one time I had to use moral judgment. I had gone to the bank one time to cash a
check through the drive through. I was 23 at the time and I was a server. My pay checks were
never over $30 or $40 so when I cashed my check I was handed back a thick envelope. I knew
there was way too much money in there to cover my small check. So pulled up and opened the
envelope and there was all $100 bills inside. I don’t how much was in there but it was a lot. That
was when my moral judgment kicked in. I will be honest it was very tempting but I just couldn’t
keep it. I thought the teller probably would have lost her job and I didn’t want that on my
shoulders. So I went back through the drive thru and turned it back in. The teller was so grateful
and it made me feel good. I believe I was starting to use critical thinking according to what the
psychologists say, “Being able to integrate emotion and logic is a critical step toward adult
thinking” (Witt and Mossler).
I would still make the same decision rather I was younger or older. I am an honest person
because I believe in that saying, “What comes around goes around”. Levinson’s stage theories
states, there is an underlying order of development, leading us through stages, each with its own
goals and difficulties to overcome. In each stage, we must first learn what to do and how to do it;
then we master those skills, making us more comfortable in that stage. Academic integrity goes
right along with what I am talking about. Academic integrity to me means being honest when
doing all of your work and not copying somebody else’s. It also means to trust, fairness, respect,
and responsibility.
