The Susan B. Komen for the Cure Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
eradicating breast cancer through advancing research. The foundation originated when Nancy G.
Brinker, the founder, promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything
possible to end breast cancer forever. As a result of this promise the global breast cancer
movement began in 1982 and has become the largest and most powerful nonprofit organization
dedicated to finding the cure for this deadly disease. The Komen Foundation has had a powerful
impact on the development of ground breaking research that has resulted in advanced screening
and more effective treatment methods.
The Komen Foundation is currently experiencing bad press over a decision to cut funding
support to Planned Parenthood. The charity is well known for being a national breast cancer
awareness group and is a leader in fundraising for breast cancer research. The charity has been
pivotal in providing women with breast screening and other breast health services and the loss of
funding to Planned Parenthood could be detrimental to the Planned Parenthood Centers. The
response to the announcement by the Komen Charity to cut funding was negative and resulted in
controversy for the nonprofit organization.
In January, the media first announced that Komen had decided to cut funding for Planned
Parenthood because the group has been embroiled in a federal investigation as to the legitimacy
of its funding. Based on the scandal and outrage by the public the Susan B. Komen Foundation
reversed their decision to cut funding to Planned Parenthood. The problem with cutting funding
is the charity is supposed to be committed to helping low-income women seek the screening they
