A Beautiful Mind
The movie “A Beautiful Mind” depicts the mental health of an individual living with
schizophrenia, providing the audience with several comments on the impact of the disorder
without limiting the scope to this aspect. The film illustrates the life of a genius mathematician
John Nash and a Nobel Prize winner who created an innovative mathematical equation within the
study of governing dynamics despite his abnormal psychology. While at Princeton University,
Nash is recognized for his brilliance, arrogance, and his social awkwardness. Nevertheless, Nash
establishes a close relationship with his roommate Herman. Thus, Nash has a mental disorder
evidenced through his auditory and visual hallucinations, delusions, and misleading perceptions
of reality, which are helpful to psychologists in determining the right diagnosis for the
conditions.
Schizophrenia, a mental disorder, is a chronic and severe psychiatric condition that alters
an individual’s thoughts and behavior by virtually affecting all brain functions (Searles, 2018).
The exact cause of schizophrenia remains unknown, forcing medics to challenge their theoretical
models and beliefs. Schizophrenia often begins gradually manifesting itself in three phases:
prodromal, residual, and active, which tend to occur sequentially (Alanen, 2018). During the first
phase, the symptoms are evident through the patient’s loss of interest in their day to day
activities and signs of withdrawal. Occasionally, they appear confused, but later the symptoms
cease to develop further. The phase can last for weeks, months, or even years. The active stage is
characterized by symptoms of psychosis, particularly after the prodromal phase. The symptoms
settle down after the active stage leading to the residual stage in which the severity of the
symptoms increases, hindering a person’s ability to function normally (Searles, 2018). At this
stage, the patient must undergo treatment with an appropriate recovery plan to avoid relapses.
