UTILITARIANISM 2
Utilitarianism Assignment
Utilitarianism affirms that some humans are more morally equal to animals, a stance that
has been countered by human exceptionalism. According to Utilitarianism, animals are moral
subjects, which means that they also have the capacity to act on the basis of moral motivations in
the same way that animals do. Since animals are also moral subjects they are entitled to enjoying
positive chances and opportunities that will flourish their moral capacities. Peter Singer, author
of Animal Liberation (1975) asserts the basic principle of equality should be afforded to non-
human animals since they also have moral capacities and have been shown to operate in similar
fashions as humans. Based on utilitarianism, “well-being is the only thing that is intrinsically
valuable” (Shafer-Landau, 2014), pg 122) thus, animals have a right to well-being, which is not
usually afforded to them.
Suffering has been termed as intrinsically bad by hedonistic utilitarianism, and on the
other hand, happiness regarded as intrinsically good and useful in spreading good to all and at all
times. Using this line of logic, that was also supported by Mill a hedonist “to produce the
greatest overall balance of happiness over misery (Shafer-Landau, 2014), pg 123), human
beings should be regarded as morally equal to animals. Having this perception of equality helps
in the promotion of good since the aim of non-human animals will be to ensure that they act and
behave in way that promotes happiness regardless of the situation and the characters. To this end,
animals will also be accorded a certain level of respect, which they are otherwise denied. For
example, the killing of animals for food or the mistreatment of animals will be thwarted as a
result of the hedonistic theory (Monsó, Benz-Schwarzburg & Bremhorst, 2018). Suffering will
be the result of the human being choosing to pursue their happiness but consuming the animals
of their choice, for instance, pigs for bacon and so forth. Approaching the issue from a hedonistic
