Fleming DeVry University 18 October 2019 o Introduction o Labor Unions are organizations that represent and fight for the interest of the workers. o These unions help employees have bargaining power over issues important to them such as working conditions, benefits, working hours, benefits, among other things. o Labor unions tend to be industry-specific and are more prevalent in areas such as the public sector, manufacturing, transportation, construction, and even the mining sector. Historical Background Samuel Gompers founded The American Federation of Labor 1886 o o o o Effects of War on Trade Unions in the US World War I and the civil war led to increase in the numbers labor unions. There were low calls for labor unions in the 1920s because the US economy was doing very well. Then the Great Depression came, no factory jobs etc. The unions came back stronger in the 1940s and literally controlled the economy. Loss of Power o The period of late 1940s saw the unions wield a lot of powers. o Their powers led to complacency and corruption. o Federal laws were also passed, which advocated for equal work and equal pay for people of all races further weakening the unions. o Their influence is not yet back to where it was in the 1940s.
