Discuss the emergence and growth of emergency management.
Emergency management is a discipline that mainly involves dealing with risks
occurrence and avoidance, (Zahran, et al., 2010). Disasters can occur at any given time without a
warning. The first notable era of evolution of emergency took place in the early years, between
1800-1950, when a Congressional Act was passed for the assistance towards the New Hampshire
Town that had been devastated by fire. It was the first example of involvement of federal
government into a local disaster, (Choi, 2008).
The other major notable era of evolution of emergency management took place during
the rise of Cold War that took place during the 1950s. It was at this time that the state and local
defense directors were first recognized as a face of emergency in the United States. Moreover it
was at such a time that even local citizens were emancipated that emergency management is a
central area of concern to the security of their daily lives, and became integrated in their daily
decisions instead of calling for help when major disasters occur yet we would have played part in
salvaging a part of the situation. In 1960, President John. F. Kennedy created the office of
Emergency Preparedness within the White House so as to handle the overwhelming cases of
emergencies. Ever since, Disaster and emergency management has been a thoughtful idea bought
all over the world as no country can boastfully claim to lack national disasters.
How did 9/11 enhance/affect the growth of emergency management?
It was in the year 1967 that Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sought the
American Telephone and Telegraph company so as to find a means of establishing a universal
call response that would help salvage the situation. Due to the emergency of the issue, the 9-1-1
number became effective throughout the United States. The 9-1-1 was a half loaf in fighting
terrorism in many countries. It helped ease police work as citizens could directly ask for help and
