Cultural relativism ethnography
The book Undocumented Dominican Migration gives an insight into cultural relativism
ethnography and the assumptions it has on the migrants while trying to penetrate through to the
United States. The book provides a fresh perspective that is given through interviews of the
undocumented migrants who successfully managed to reach Puerto Rico by boat. The author builds
on the neoclassical economics, world system theories and neoliberalism to develop another
perspective that explains the migration patterns at the time. One of the contributions of the author is
how he gives the migrants perspective and motivations that come from their own experiences and
the contrast that come from the reality of the migration journey (p.28). He uses cultural specific
approaches applied to migrations and also gives the perspectives played by the political, social, and
economic patterns that influence the migration patterns.

choice but to risk their lives, their departure from their countries is a confrontation with the reality.
Their strong will makes them risk their lives in large oceans and strict border enforcement, which
all restrict the freedom and movements of the immigrants (p. 29).
In the second chapter, the author describes the migration culture, and he informs how people
come to under pressure for a better life that they decide to migrate to the USA. From the
conversations of the characters, there is an illusion of a better life that, at times, is fictitious. The
people who migrate have a feeling that the individuals who migrated might be doing better than
themselves. These beliefs are filled by the media of the good life abroad that lead to the desire to
