Writer (1857–1924)
Joseph Conrad is a British writer who is famous for his novels e.g. Lord Jim and Heart of
Darkness which exploited his knowledge as a mariner and concentrated on intense themes of
experience and nature.
Joseph Conrad ( Teodor Jozef Konrad Korzeniowski) was born on 3 December 1857. He
was the only child of a patriotic Polish couple who lived in the southern Polish Ukraine. Conrad's
father Apollo was a translator of Shakespeare, in addition to he was also a poet and a man of
letters in Poland, likewise Conrad's mother Evelina was also polite lady with a devoted mind but
with weak health. In 1895 following a sea-faring career Conrad began his literary work and
published his first novel, “Almayer's Folly” (1895) which received mostly positive reviews.
In March 1896 he married to Jessie Emmeline George (1873-1936) and blessed with two
sons, Borys (b.1898) and John (b.1906). At that time he was retired and sincerely writing, his
work was published first in Blackwood’s, Munsey’ sand Harpers. At this time his publications
included: An Outcast of the Islands (1896), The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’ (1897), Tales of
Unrest (1898),Lord Jim (1900), collaborations with Ford Madox Ford The Inheritors (1901) and
Romance (1903), Youth (1902), Typhoon (1903),Nostromo (1904), The Mirror of the Sea (1906,

semi-autobiographical), The Secret Agent (1907), A Set of Six (1908), and Under Western
Eyes (1911).
In Heart of Darkness (1902) he wrote,
“. . . No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given
epoch of one’s existence—that which makes its truth, its meaning—it’s subtle and
penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream—alone. . . .” (Part 1)
He also has short-story collections and a journal titled as A Personal Record (1912) in
which he expressed his experience in remote places, depict moral conflict, and the worst side of
human nature. He also introduced autobiographical writings and novels, like: The Arrow of
Gold and The Rescue”. His last novel “The Rover” was published in 1923.

He played his role with immense enthusiasm. He was a short, tiny man with a short beard, and he
was "aristocrat". Conrad was truly a master.
During the World War I he was spending in Poland with his family, and they hardly
escaped from imprisonment. Then he went back to England to assemble his all work which
emerged in 1920, and he was offered a knighthood by the British government. In August 1924 he
got a heart attack and buried at Canterbury.
Critical Criticism on “Heart of Darkness”
The novel was written between 1898 -1899. In December, Conrad wrote to his publisher to
clarify that:
