Chapter Four of Adult Development and Lifetime Assessment addresses the cognitive abilities of adults in middle
age. Review the cognitive areas discussed by Schaie and answer the following questions:
Of those cognitive areas, discussed by Schaie, which do you think are your strongest?
Which are your weakest?
How can you utilize your strongest areas in your class work?
What can you do to strengthen your weaker areas?
When using supporting information from Adult Development and Lifetime Assessment or another resource for your
discussion post, be sure to properly paraphrase the content. Also, properly cite the source and add the source
reference in APA format at the end of your post. Review the PSY202: Writing Resource for an example.
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two of
your classmates’ posts by Monday, Day 7. (You must create one initial post and at least two responses, for a
minimum of three posts for this discussion.)
Schaie discusses the cognitive areas in chapter four as: vocabulary, verbal memory,
number, spatial orientation, perceptual speed, and inductive reasoning (Witt,G. &
Mossler, R., 2010). I think in my opinion that I am probably strongest vocabulary and
inductive reasoning. My weakest areas of cognitive skill would be number and verbal
memory. Utilizing my stronger skill can help me figure out things that at first read make
no sense to me. If I do not know what it means, I can use the meanings of certain
words and reason out what it is asking or meaning. My weaker skills can be
strengthened through practice. Numbers all come easier with constant work and
practice. I have never been great with numbers or math, but the more you work with it
the easier it comes. The same with verbal memory, practice makes perfect. Just
repeating and trying over and over to absorb the skills is all you can do.
