COMMUNICATIONS AND WRITING FOR CJ PROFESSIONALS 2
Communication and Writing for CJ Professionals
Abstract
Communication is a crucial element in all aspects of life, be it communication at the
workplace, at home or even with a stranger in a park. It does not matter where, but
communication helps us understand what is happening around us as well as in delivering proper
information. Communication can be verbal, written or even symbolic. This paper addresses the
issue of communication and writing in the context of criminal justice. Focusing on how Criminal
Justice professionals communicate in their day to day running of the system.
Difference between first person and third person styles of writing.
The first-person style of writing is applied when someone is narrating their own story,
talking about themselves. For example, I was lost in the woods and wandered for hours. On the
other hand, the third person style of writing gets used when someone is describing events from a
watcher’s point of view, it like he watching an event happen and therefore tells it as an observer
(Buck et al., 2015). For example, He was knocked down by a car while crossing the road. The
pronouns used in the first-person style are I and we while in third person they make use pronouns
like they and he.
Advantages of using the first person in investigative reports
The first-person style of writing is used in investigative reports as it makes it easier to
understand the point the witness is putting across. It is evidentiary in showing that the person
telling the story was present when the crime happened. Witnesses use it in recording testimony
so that the information does not sound like mere speculation.
