ADULT DEVELOPMENT: SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS 2
Adult Development: Social Relationships
Different studies focus on different issues associated with adult development, considering
the implications of the subject on ensuring and improving the welfare of the adult population.
Shafie et al. (2017) conducted explicit research on the implications of gait speed on social
relationships among elderly adults in Singapore. The researchers used deviation from the
expected speed as the determinant for gait speed, which they then compared to a professionally
administered questionnaire to determine the relationship between the speed and the individual’s
social life. Ultimately, the researchers determined that gait speed had a significant impact on
individuals’ social lives, as it determined the chances that they could easily interact with the rest
of society in addition to engaging in different social activities in the community. Consequently,
the main point in the article herein is that the quality of mobility of an older adult could imply his
or her ability to develop social networks. The study further confirms that inclusivity in different
activities in the community forms one of the critical measures that lead to expansion of the older
adults’ social support system considering the implications of interaction in such environments.
On the other hand, Lecce et al. (2017) sought to understand the relationship between the
Theory of Mind (TOM) and social relationships developed by older adults. The lack of sufficient
focus on the subject by different scholars formed the basis of the research, as the scholars hoped
to address the gap in research into the theory by addressing the subject. In this case, the
researchers tested health issues among the respondents and after that involved in responding to a
questionnaire on their social relationships and perspectives therein. Results from the study
revealed that the ToM significantly influenced relationships among the elderly in their
association with friends. Most importantly, the research findings confirmed the necessity for
motivation and the environment in determining relationships between different individuals.
