NATURE OF WORK 2
The nature of work and individual attitudes toward work have evolved over time and
between generations.
The world today is not the same; it has evolved from generation to generation. Workplaces
today experience tastes from different generations ranging from veteran generations; ones who
believed in more Work than leisure all through to generations Y and even the encroaching
generation Z; ones who believe in more leisure than Work. In between their also exists generation
X and the common Baby Boomers. With the constant ever-changing conditions and practices at
the workplace from the most recent generation to the aging, veterans are gradually leaving the
workplace while generations Z and Y are busy replacing them. Even though experiences are
shaped by life, it's prudent to believe veterans have a different attitude towards Work and leisure
compared to generation Y and Z. According to Bryner (2010), the millennials or GenMe or
generation Y/Z individuals tend to value not only leisure than Work but also they tend to value
higher salaries and status. Bryner (2010)further goes ahead to illustrate that the desire for leisure
amongst the Y/Z generation always begins way early before they even have their own families.
The differences in preferences amongst generations at workplaces sometimes lead to confusion,
and as a result, generations are colliding at the workplaces, which may lead to some damages, thus
reduction in productivity.
The interrelationship between work and personal life
The world has become one small village that is interconnected with technology. It is by no
surprise that we can now buy goods from one corner of the world to another, work from one
country to another, and attend conferences while from different parts of the world at the same time.
All these practically show how the world is interconnected. There is a myriad of cultures existing
in the world today. All these cultures have either one or two things to offer, which, when taken
into consideration, can positively or negatively influence the world. The diversity in cultures
significantly impact performances in or at Work, since people from different backgrounds and
cultures have special capabilities thus these elements could influence how they conduct their Work
in the organization including and not limited to how they solve various challenges, problems, and
conflicts at the organization among other positive influences at the workplaces (Heggertveit-
Aoudia, 2012). Diversity at the workplace eventually offers a conducive environment for workers
to interact freely with one another, thus allowing the free exchange of opinions. Freedom of
expression and marvelous working conditions motivates workers to work even better, thereby
leading to increased productivity.
Need for Career Development
Career development technically refers to the process of managing or impacting
individual/people's work-life, personal lifestyles, and education throughout their lifespan. Career
development services have several benefits in the society and thus should be exercised widely.
Firstly, it can make a difference within the education system Guthrie & Nechvoglod (2011).
Therefore to say, career development services can easily lay foundations in the line of occupation
of individuals, thus eventually impacting their lifelong career. Moreover, career development
enables a smooth and effective transition of young individuals from one stage of schooling to
