CEPHALOCAUDAL AND PROXIMAL-DISTAL 2
Cephalocaudal and proximodistal development
Cephalocaudal can be defined as the development of someone that occurs from head
to toe. The growth happens in an exciting way, especially for infants. The infants will first
have control of their neck muscles, which allows them to hold their head up steadily. In
essence, the process of physical growth and how a child loses fats around the neck, arms, and
upper abdomen happen in what is called a cephalocaudal fashion. Proximodistal development
is the development of motor skills that starts at the centre of an organism and moves outwards
from there. In human beings, this begins with the woman's womb and moves outwards. From
here, the infants start to learn how to move their arms and legs. Once the core skills for their
limbs are developed firmly, then the fingers and the toe manipulation and other movements
will start to grow (Chaudhary, 2017).
Parents and teachers support
Cephalocaudal and proximodistal development help parents and teachers when it
comes to supporting a child's development. For example, when an infant is born, their bones
are very weak, and the neck of the child cannot even support the head. As the child grows,
the parents of the infant begin to train the child on how to walk as the bones of the child
begin to become strong. In school, the teachers have a responsibility for the child's
development. In physical education, the teachers give the children exercises according to the
development of the child. For example, a young child who hasn't fully developed all the
bones and muscles cannot be expected to perform tough exercises. The exercises given to the
children should be to build their motor development and should be gradual (Ardha, 2018)
Effects on movement
When infants are born, they gradually begin to strengthen their neck muscles. The neck can
support the head, and then the spine starts to be healthy. The spine supports the whole body.
