Fire Safety and Emergency 2
Fire Safety and Emergency
Oman is located in the Arabian Peninsula, and it is a country rich in oil deposits; thus, the
region mines oil. Over the decade, the area has experienced considerable development in aspects
about life that is industrial and commercial building as well as the number of dwellings. In
comparison to other countries, fire accidents within the region are not as high as other nations.
This is due to the eminence of severe fire and emergency legislation which govern the usage of
non-combustible construction materials, among others. Fire statistics in the region over the last
decade stood at 17500 fire accidents, and there were 750 deaths and injuries that resulted from
fire incidents (Al-Jabri, 2007, p. 468). Other than the loss of life, the cost of loss of property over
the same period was estimated at 100 million pounds (Al-Jabri, 2007, p. 468). The prevention of
fire accidents much depends on the eminence of policies that prevent the occurrence of such
incidences. The article aims at the exploration of occupational health hazards and policies
implemented and practices in the prevention of such incidences in Oman Oil Refineries and
Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC).
Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC)
ORPIC is an enterprise that entails the integration of three organizations that is Aromatics
Oman LLC, Oman Refineries and Petrochemicals, and lastly, Oman Polypropylene. ORPIC
operates oil refineries that are MAF and Sohar refineries. The organization also entails an
aromatic plant and polypropylene plant. This indicates that the organization produces LPG gas,
fuel as well as the production of plastics. In the petrochemical industry, major accidents have
occurred from oil spills as well as toxic clouds, for instance, the Seveso accident which occurred
in 1976 that saw a chemical plant which manufactures pesticides and herbicide release a dense
vapor cloud from the reactor (Yu and Guan, 2016, p. 661). Despite the absence of immediate
fatalities, more than 600 individuals were evacuated from their homes and more than 2000
people treated for dioxin poisoning. This indicates the need for policies within the petrochemical
industries that prevent the occurrence of such incidences as well as emergency policies
formulated in the protection of individuals in case such incidences are inevitable.
