Abstract
Salsa music was established in the 1960s by young people who resided in the urban centers in
Latin America. The young people living in the neighborhoods came to accept the salsa music
genre as their musical and also form of expression. However, global popularity was informed by
various social conditions and historical happenings, such as the black pride movements in
America. The paper seeks to discuss the purpose and function of salsa music. The paper will
argue that salsa music importance should be understood in terms of music and a social life that
sought to respond to various issues. Salsa music sought to provide a liberation experience,
especially for the people working in the urban. Just like other music genres, salsa acted as a
refuge for the African- American after work, during weekends, and during leisure time. It offered
liberation to both the mind and the body by dancing. Additionally, it also challenged oppressive
hierarchies of race, class musical, and cultural principles. Further to this, it provided the Puerto
Ricans with a means fell free from their dependency and association with America. Therefore, it
offered cultural freedom that resonated with the other existing musicians and audiences across
Latin America.
