What is the difference between a vision and a mission? Where have you seen
misleading organizational mission, vision, and values statements? How did that
affect the organization?
A statement from a company can be a very important tool because it shows the level
of intent to the consumers and stakeholders like. A vision statement is a descriptive
statement for the long term goals of the company in the future tense. The mission
statement can be described as a road map for the company to achieve that vision
statement (Business Dictionary, 2012).
The company goes astray here when I feel that they do not take serious thoughts
and approaches towards both statements. If the statements are not taken serious,
then the company is really wasting a chance to give the stakeholders and consumers
a clear path for which they want to take. A prime example of this is Wal-Mart and the
fact that the company's statements are exactly the same. The company's statement
is "We save people money so they can live better" (New York Times, 2012).
My issue with this statement is that it lacks a true numerical or measurable quality or
quantity for the long term goals and it lacks a description of "how" it achieves. The
company has been successful, especially domestically, and now the goals are for the
company to be receptive in the long term global sense. Bottom line, the company
could have done better due to the lack of direction and vision.
