What are the various manufacturing processes? Which manufacturing process is most
appropriate for your organization and why?
The various types of manufacturing processes are continuous process,
high-volume manufacturing, mid-volume manufacturing, and low-volume
job shops. Continuous process uses full automation, low labor content in
product costs, and facilities dedicated to one product. High-volume
manufacturing uses automated equipment, partial automated handling,
moving assembly lines, and most equipment in line. Mid-volume
manufacturing uses group technology cells and focused minifactories. Low-
volume job shops uses machining centers organized by manufacturing
function, high labor content in product cost, general-purpose machinery
with significant changeover time, little automation of material handling, and
a large variety of product. (Chase, Jacobs, Aquilano, 2006 p 666).
For producing the plush products that my organization sells, high-volume
manufacturing and low-volume job shops are most likely used in the
warehouses. Machines sew and stuff the toys, but additional designing is
done by hand.
