Analysis of Claude Monet Impression: Sunrise Color Element
Monet masterfully uses color in this artwork to represent what he saw by harmoniously
using different colors to represent the mood of that particular time. Monet in the Impression:
Sunrise art conforms to the impressionist style of painting through spontaneity and the sense of
immediacy, which is apparent through the use of colors. Two colors dominate the painting; blue
and orange. The shade color has been used throughout the art with the orange in the sun, and the
color in the water to produce a contrasting accent that gives the painting impression element.
This is to say that art relies on the opposition of the complementaries and near complementaries
of color to produce the mixture that provides the painting with extraordinary value. However,
five colors can be identified throughout the painting, including orange, blue, black, white, and
yellow. The colors have been applied in a painterly manner and invisible strokes, which have a
varying thickness to account for the textual element of the painting. The colors used to make the
intention and the purpose of the art apparent, and one could almost tell that the sun is central to
the depiction. The use of the orange color and its reflection to depict the application in the
foreground and the background gives a contrasting effect with other colors, which make the

impression more representing. The luminous color of the sun pulsates around the painting, while
perfectly blending with the blue sky and boldly reflecting on the ocean. The color gives life to
the motionless scene as it vibrates against the vast waters of the sea, and especially to the figures
placed in the forefront. Moreover, the use of bright colors is meant to draw the audience's
attention to the main focus on art, the sun. The artists use brilliant orange to depict the sun
glimmers amidst the foggy air and the dances on the rippling water. The blending of the orange
color and the sky color are seamlessly giving the rest of the painting an eerie feel that makes the
art to communicate to the audience and tell of a story through Monet’s eye. Undeniably, it is
clear that the focus of this artwork is on color because the brushwork is loose and straightforward
and lacks details, yet with a reasonably elemental composition. Regardless of the underlying
form, the layered effects and different use of colors create depth that creates a stable
environment. The artist focuses on hue and saturation contrast of the colors; the use of black
color to paint the boat gives a value contrast with the surrounding colors making it easily
noticeable from a glance.
The sun reflection in the water, which runs from the background to the foreground, is depicted
through the orange colors and using hazy painting to illustrate that is was during the morning
hours, and the sun was rising. The art is a show of Monet’s prowess in using color to harmonize
the picture and draw the readers' attention to the subject matter. The boats on the left of the
painting have been masterfully painted with the dark color to make it possible to identify them
and contrast them with the surroundings quickly. Furthermore, Monet placed the colors of the
image side by side and mixed optically to match the viewer's eye, making it an impression to the
eye. The brown color on the top left of the image- which is a mixture of the blue and orange
color gives the art a linking color, which makes the overall contrasting dramatically effective. In
