This classic of music analysis is authored by a noted musicologist. It presents interesting
insights into Beethoven’s music as well as personality. The editor of this title is George
Grove and he is also the editor of Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He offers a
robust background information on the historical era of the composer while presenting quotes,
anecdotes and letters. He gets to look at the nine symphonies in an orderly pattern and also

400 in number.

Annotation
When Sullivan John Dwight (1813 1893) came up with the great Dwight’s Journal of music
in 1852, he established his reputation as being the first main American critic of art music.
Yet, the significance of his early career, and more so his significant purpose in the
introduction of Ludwig van Beethoven’s symphonies to one of music was not sophisticated to
the general public. This is because they have been shadowed by his later writings in the
music field. This work does present his formative years which explore the slow
championship of his symphonies in America and looks at his development of the criticism of
music. Frishberg Saloman goes on to analyze a range of writings by Dwight that were

between his early writings and the later ones.

The volume presents an overview which is up to date on the performance, survey of the many
issues like influence of recording at work. It goes on to suggest some of the notable future
developments. The main aim encompasses a discussion of the performer’s period as well as
primary sources as well as how they are interpreted. It also lists the many kinds of style and
the major techniques which all come together to bring about a well-grounded timespan as
well as interpretation and survey of the performance practices. Majority of the principles that
have been outlined here are also covered in case studies written by Back, Brahms, Berlioz
and Mozart.
Weingartner, F. (1907). On the performance of Beethoven's symphonies. Edwin F. Kalmus.

Annotation
This volume does have English translations of 3 significant literary works authored by
Austrian conductor Felix Weingartner (1863 1942). The essay that is in the title concerns
some exemplary account of some given performing difficulties as well as questions that are
of interpretation in every nine symphonies. This is a great treatment which will be worthy to
music students. Some other features entail conducting and the symphony since Beethoven all
of which explain the belief that the author has that art is at its best when an intricately small
balance is placed between the intellect and the feeling.

Annotation
More than any given composer, Beethoven left behind a great volume of materials as well as
documents of almost anything he wrote in the early stages. From the volume of sketchbooks,
Lockwood Lewis comes up with the mind of the composer while bringing about some
creative process of great originality and scope. For the case of musicians as well as
nonmusicians in the same vein, Beethoven’s symphonies are placed at the greatest height of
realistic artistic achievement. They are still as loved as they were 200 years ago in the current
