SENSATION, PERCEPTION, AND CONSCIOUSNESS 2
Sensation, Perception, and Consciousness
The absolute threshold represents the minimum level of stimulus that is detectable by
human senses such as touch, taste, smell, sight, or sound (Khabbaz, Goldenberg and Drake,
2016). I am one of those people who sweat literally after leaving the bathroom, and this explains
why I like using perfume to prevent the foul smell. My mother strongly detests the smell of
sweat, but she also complains that the strong smell of my perfume irritates her. To avoid
confrontations with her, I prefer doing my perfume from outside as I leave the house so that by
the time I return, the smell is not very smell.
Difference Threshold is also referred to as just noticeable difference, and it relates to the
least difference between two stimuli that can be detected from fifty percent of the trials (Matthen,
2015). For instance, the difference between two apples of different colors is detectable because
one can only choose between the two colors.
Sensory Adaptation involves the sense of taste. It refers to a reduction in sensitivity after
an individual has been continuously exposed to it (Ruff, 2013). For instance, my mother has been
cooking very spicy food since we were young. I was surprised last month when I won the pepper
eating competition held in our school by eating ten red peppers in two minutes.
Dark/Light Adaptation involves the sensitivity of m where and emotional factors that
influence chronic pain, and it operates the retina to the changes in lighting. The light adaptation
occurs when an individual moves from a dark room to a brightly lit place, and they see a white
light before adjusting to the light conditions (Matthen, 2015). One day I woke up to go to the
toilet at night and fell to the ground after reaching the sitting room. I later came to realize that the
fall happened since my retina had not adjusted to the change in lighting, and I could not see
clearly. The dark adaptation is the reverse of the light adaptation, and it occurs when an
