Differences between VPN and dial-up
The virtual private network (VPN) is a private network connects users and sites they use
together using internet while dial-up involves establishing a connection between two or more
devices using a telephone network switch which is open to link to an Internet Service Provider
(ISP) (Comer, 2018). VPN allows its users to remotely connect and easily log in to the network
while in dial-up, there is ease of setting up the connection, but the cost of maintenance is higher.
VPN permits its clients to link to corporate networks more economically through broadband.
Contrary to this, dial-up does not allow its clients to use broadband links when establishing
connections. VPN is scalable, such that it gives room for growth to accommodate changes in
user needs. For instance, it allows the expansion of bandwidth of commercial networks in case
there are so many users. It is not easy to expand the dial-up connection because it requires a lot
of cabling and hardware purchasing to enlarge it.
Protocols and the requirements for VPN and dial-up remote access
In most cases, Dial-up uses SERIAL LINE INTERNET PROTOCOL and POINT-TO-POINT
PROTOCOL to create internet connections. To set up PPP, you require PPP Protocol, a
telephone number, the password and account name, Internet Protocol number, and Domain
Name Server IP addresses. VPN uses Internet Protocol Security (IPsec), which secures data
across connection by encrypting each packet, OpenVPN protocol that is an open-source that
provides reliable encryption of data, and Secure Shell Protocol (SSH) that protects data by
encrypting it and creating a VPN tunnel for effective data transfer (Vishwakarma, 2016). To
set up a VPN connection, you need to have client VPN software, routers and firewall, and VPN
appliances. In consideration of the process of setting up and the ease of access and
implementation, VPN remote access is the most reliable to use at home. Since VPN is scalable,
cheaper, secure, easy to maintain, affordable, and provides a better performance, a home
worker should consider to install and run it in his/ her place.
